Old fishing vessel to be replaced with a new environmentally friendly ship

New builds fishing vessel

Bluewild AS has received a commitment to support from the NOx Fund of NOK 25 million under the fleet renewal program. The new trawler will be completed by the end of 2023.

The 10th of August 2020, the NOx Fund launched a support program for fleet renewal with investment support for new buildings that replace older ships with taxable emissions. The purpose of the support program is to help so older ships, which would otherwise have continued with high taxable NOx emissions, to be replaced by new ships with low NOx emissions (tier III or better).

The fishing company Bluewild will replace the old trawler Langenes, which was built in 1986 with a new building which will fish for quotas for cod, saithe, haddock, and shrimp. They have been promised support of NOK 25 million from the NOx Fund and it is estimated to reduce 85 tonnes of NOx.

The new vessel is named after the concept ECOFIVE - eco-friendly fishing vessel. It will contribute to more sustainable fishing by delivering environmental upgrade, quality, safety, economy, and society.

- ECOFIVE will immediately increase economic growth regionally and nationally by building the boat in Norway. In addition, the project will be able to provide national and international market opportunities for design companies, equipment suppliers and shipyards. The ship will have an average low fuel consumption and emissions. Especially during trawling at low speeds. We will be able to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 40 percent, and a NOx reduction of up to 70 percent, says Tore Roaldsnes, CEO of Bluewild.

Ulstein delivers design, engineering and a package for the power system which consists of generators, electric motors for propulsion including frequency converters, a complete battery system, switchboards and distribution solution, and control system for power and energy control. The new trawler will have an efficient hybrid system with two propellers that can combine batteries with both diesel-electric and diesel-mechanical propulsion. This will reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent.

- This is an exciting project and good development for the fishing fleet. In fact, this is the largest project the NOx Fund has supported in the fishing fleet and has significant NOx reductions. We hope this will motivate and stimulate other shipping companies to apply for fleet renewal program, says general manager Tommy Johnsen.
