The NOx Fund supports Berge Rederi's groundbreaking zero-emissions project with 150 million NOK

Berge Shipping

The NOx Fund has granted up to 150 million NOK to Berge Rederi for an ambitious zero-emissions project set to revolutionize the transport of marble from Brønnøy to Omya Hustadmarmor's production facility in Elnesvågen.

The NOx Fund's commitment to Berge Rederi's pioneering project includes the construction of a 13,000 DWT ship which will operate entirely emission-free, utilizing a large battery pack, rotor sails, and shore power. This vessel will be the world's largest bulk carrier powered exclusively by batteries and will cover one of the longest sailing distances for battery-electric operation, approximately 230 nautical miles between Elnesvågen and Brønnøy.

Sustainable Shipping

The project will not only mark a milestone in sustainable shipping, but also significantly reduce NOx emissions by up to 200 tons per year. The technologies to be employed includes battery-electric propulsion, rotor sails, and an electric excavator, along with charging infrastructure supported by Omya Hustadmarmor AS and Enova.

Magnus Hexeberg, Marketing Manager at the NOx Fund, stated that this project represents a significant step forward for maritime sustainability. "We are proud to support Berge Rederi in their innovative efforts to reduce emissions. This initiative showcases how collaboration between cargo owners, shipping companies, technology providers, and support systems can drive substantial environmental improvements."
